Feeling down, sad, or upset is normal. But when it goes on for weeks on end, maybe even years you are suffering from depression.

There are physical symptoms such as decreased energy, chronic fatigue, or feeling sluggish. You may have difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or recalling things. There may be pain, aches, cramps, or gastrointestinal problems without any clear cause; even changes in appetite or weight, difficulty sleeping, waking early, or oversleeping.

Depression has emotional symptoms. Loss of interest, no longer finding pleasure in activities or hobbies, persistent feelings of sadness including emptiness, guilt, hopelessness or pessimism, anger and irritability. You may have feelings of worthlessness or helplessness; thoughts of suicide.

Depression can be a chemical or hormonal imbalance. I coach depression patients at No Couch Therapy using cognitive behavioral therapy and work with their primary care doctor when medication is required.
